Moss on Stones

*
Moss on Stones

on the shady road
a splash of verdant green light
brings me to a halt

the greenly green moss
draped over the low stone wall
feels soft like velvet

soft and springy moss
gently caresses cold stones
bringing life and warmth

reaching to the light
thousands of tiny fern plants
weave into a rug

a road in the bush
uneven stacks of grey stones
clad in emerald robes

attending gym class
may be onerous, but yields
a hidden blessing

  8. Priya,

    How is it in Bangalore?

the moss was irresistible...I had to turn the car around and retrace my journey on the one way road to find the moss again...then risk life and limb...no not really - there is hardly a car on this road to the gym...

  9. You travel a lovely road to the gym! I haven't seen moss like this in years...and I live in a country that loves moss!

  10. I admire the photos the lovely images. But equally, I admire your haiku and the fact you observe the 5-7-5 syllable count format. I love stopping by your blog for a daily dose of mindful appreciation of our miraculous world.

  11. High haiku! This is a great post for poetry lovers --- each stanza a perfect haiku, the whole musing a poem in words and images.

  12. You've evoked such a feeling of soft velvet, it makes me want a moss cloak touching my body. Also makes me think of old universities with high, stately moss on stone.

  13. Tulsa,
Yes the gym is on the edge of town at a golf course resort. One of my very first posts focused on the gym surrounds. It is a shady road overhung with trees - perfect moss territory...

  17. Hi Margaret,
yes moss belongs to damp dark places, bygone times, old historic buildings as much as rainy wet forests, rotting logs and shady pathways...

I was amazed at the softness of that little ferny moss, and springy like foam...

  19. The photos and the words are delightful. I, too, love moss, even though I live where there's little of it. I wrote a poem celebrating moss; you might like it.

  21. I believe that a rolling stone gathers no moss so I have an overwhelming urge to set all these stones free. I can hear them now squealing with delight as I gleefully rip them from their wet mossy prison and cast them down the hills of fate
    - farewell stones, gather no moss, be free stones, let none enslave you again - sing, dance and squash as many humans as possible on your merry way.

  22. Hi Julie,

I am becoming a routine stopper...

  24. Alden,

I think these regal rocks are quite happy in their emerald robes sitting quietly on the edge of the bush lording over the road.

Like me they may have done their wild rolling and rambling and enjoy a warm huddle and cuddle together under their gorgeous cloaks.

  25. Mona, hi

have you tried lifting moss and transplanting it...it does work, but you will need the same damp shady conditions for it to thrive ...

  26. Rosaria,

    they leapt out at me,

actually when I walked back after parking the car at the gym I couldn't find them - I had to walk on a path on the opposite side of the road and the rocks were hidden by the vegetation.
So I crossed the two lane road which had a thick median strip of bush and leapt out the other side just as my friend was making her way down to the gym. She couldn't believe her eyes as I emerged from the bush quite along way from the gym...but when she saw my camera in my hand she knew that I was on a mission.
By then it was getting late so we went to pump class and I came back later to find the rocks and do what I had to do...

  28. Alden,

Maybe these rocks don't feel bound...maybe they enjoy the company of other green clad stones, maybe they are content to be...

  31. Hi,Delwyn.

Beautiful moss drapes! I love green moss too. Whenever I see it, I feel like touching and pressing my cheek against it. At first I saw your lovely photos, I wondered "Where is it? May be taken in Kyoto." WOW! What a surprise!
Your green moss and stone walls remind me of "Kokedera=Moss Temple" in Kyoto. Thank you!!

  32. Hi ☆sapphire

There is that need to touch the velvety moss...

I don't know the moss temple unless it is in the moss garden at Arashiyama in Kyoto, where I have been.

but these stones are right here in the subtropics....

    Happy Days
