Reflections

*

Yesterday's Reflections...

The sun sinks early
in the winter afternoons
lighting the riverbank
across from my home

and casting wonderful shadows
into the sky reflected waters

my camera decided to change the tones
as an extra treat for me...

the large gum trees
in their reflected images
have turned to squiggly gums

and the daylight slips away

*

And
one other day quite recently ...

After the stormy rains and wind
the earth stood quite still
took a deep breath
and watched...

A fisherman sits
on a green mirrored river
hoping for dinner

Beneath the green trees
the kayaks glide noiselessly
through grey trunk ripples

Reflections...

  4. Your photographs of reflections made me realise for the first time the obvious meaning of 'to reflect' - a reflection of something is an image repeated in a mirror, water etc - it is another image of the same thing. To sit and 'reflect' is for the mind to look at itself - its own thoughts and images. Never really thought about it like that before - but I am often immune to the bleeding obvious.

  6. Hi Mr Sailor,

That's an interesting thought because we often use the term to imply mulling over when it really means to look at it clearly and as it is ...mmmmmmm

I wonder if we can ever do that...or is it always a bit murky?

I'll have to reflect on that some more...

  8. Hello my little Kobe friend

well I will leave you to your reflecting and resting and away to bed - early market start tomorrow, and it has been so cold at 6am....BRRRRRR but will be worth it...and hot coffees are so great after all the produce has been purchased - maybe even a Japanese pancake too - yes we have a stall that makes bean or custard filled fish shaped pancakes and now for winter the Japanese lady and her chef husband are making okonomiyaki!! fancy that!!!

    Happy days

  9. How very, very beautiful...and so sublimely tranquil. How wonderful that you have this view from your home, Delwyn - what a sense of peace it must engender.

I've had a lovely time catching up on your recent posts - all of which are a complete delight. I feel quite refreshed now. Thank you, Delwyn!

  15. Delwyn, like Meri, I am always entranced by the idea of Reflections. I am transported away by your pictures ~ it's a moment of bliss. Especially the contrast of colours in the last one. I always feel like I could be right there with you. Wish I was tonight.

    Bright Blessings.

  17. Hello Tessa
It's nice to have your company again.
This view from my house is so serene. Our house is largely glass so from almost any point you can see the river and the grey trunks of the gums across the water - and it's always changing colour.

As I sit in my study writing now I am looking through the living room to the large gum in the centre of these shots and looking at the light playing on it - it is 8.45am and I am thinking I should do a series of that one tree over the course of a day to watch the shifting sun...
    there are always fresh ideas...
    thank you for your encouragement,

    Happy Days

You are probably already at the market having a ball now! Sounds like there is going to be lots of yummy stuff...I can't imagine eating okonomiyaki in Australia...that's great!

well, I'm off to work now!

  20. Good morning Gary

I think many of us are gazers and reflecters...my dictionary wants me to write reflectors and I guess we are that too sometimes...

I had not thought much about the double image until I looked closely at these and noticed that some points stood out more in the reflection than in the real - possibly because I know the scene so well, so standing it on its head allowed me to see if afresh.
And then I inverted the mirror image and looked at it that way - and that was interesting too, then I stood the image vertically and noticed how symmetrical the 2 images can be and what an interesting shape the double image can make - a little like one of those perception exercises with the faces and vase.
How much fun can one have with reflections???

  22. Hi Mof R

As I just said to Tessa I am going to keep watching my favourite gum over the course of the day...so I went to take some photos of it now and it is extremely peaceful, with occasional outbursts from the crows and a group of rainbow lorikeets feeding on the wattle and tea tree swampy area behind the river bank border of gums and large trees. Luckily this land is a reserve and can never be built on.

I find one kind of reflection leads to another in this environment...

  24. Hi Samantha

there is not a day goes by when I do not count my blessings for the opportunity to live right here on this river and be inside nature although be in town.

I like that last shot because you might have noticed there is a boat on the right hand side which has cut through the reflection and the wake has left a glassy smoothed over look to the far side of the river - the wake is rolling over towards me through the reflected image.

Is Sat work usual for you?
I know Poppy often got roped in to do special Sat activities with the children - camps and outings and speech days.

  29. Wow! You had a really busy and early morning...!

Oh Delwyn...I have to work both Sat. and Sundays most often. I do get an occasional weekend day off but unless something "major" happens I don't get two days off in a row....
When I was a teacher, the exact thing happened to me just like Poppy! They rope you in pretty tight sometimes...lol

Japan's temp. is Celsius. The mornings are about 18c but in the afternoon it gets to be about 25.
Although Poppy is in a different city I think we are having similar weather right now. Which do you use in Australia? C or F?

Oh, and we use cm instead of inches..things like this were hard for me to adjust to at first!

Now I am off to see more of your brilliant pictures!

You work so hard over there - long hours and tough schedules...you need some good Au unions to battle for your rights!

We are in C and metric measurements too. I can't believe the US is still in imperial...so archaic...

I think I have the camera or scanner to thank for the golden hue - see the 'you might like' box with the same photo used a while back and it appears a little greener...
