Sand Patterns

Sand Patterns

I wander along the beach

where the retreating tide

has left works of art
in the wet sand

from nature's hand

come closer
Do you see the shaggy
red setter dog?

grey brown painting
transitory
and timeless etchings

gifts from the sea's great dance

and an occasional helper...

  2. Hi Rosaria

I think you just have to be there...this am I walked on the beach in the rain and saw the most magnificent rainbow emerge from the trees and spread right across the bay...I felt as if I was walking right under it and through the arch...

  5. Good Morning, Delwyn.

Fantastic sand patterns! The first and sencond ones are like a beautiful graphic design!! Yes. I saw a shaggy dog on the sand in the third photo!! It's like a dog in a sumi-e drawing! I was very impressed with the photo; Mist over the mountains too! It's a masterpiece!

  6. I "heart" the sand, water, beach, sun, etc!! I would love to go for a walk down the beach and discover the patterns the sand makes... but since I can't... I'll live through your beautiful work and delight in the patterns along with you :)

  8. and how is the shell hunting?

  9. Hi Tom

quite a dearth of shells on this beach Tom. Occasionally I find a cowrie but little else...

BUT the waterfalls are running today and they are something else...

  10. Hi Bonnie
I loved the variety too...how do waves do that...the iron sands must be heavier than the gold perhaps...

  14. Hi Layers

did you see the letters in the track?

As I was squatting down looking at the sand patterns a life saver rolled by in his beach buggy...hence the patterns...

  15. Hi Delwyn - i'm baaaack! I was scrolling down the reading list on my dashboard and saw your blog and one picture ... it hit me that the designs in the sand look like the old-fashionned smocking we used to see on little girls dresses!

  16. Bonnie

it does...you know how sometimes things seem to register subliminally but never reach the surface...maybe when we cannot understand reasons behind our attractions that is why we are drawn to certain things...
I loved that smocking...even did some myself at one time...for a dress for myself when I was a teenager - a baby doll sort of dress in pink gingham!!!
and also for my last daughter...

  17. Delwyn these are wonderful...just the kind of photos of nature I like to take...my kids and my husband standing nearby restlessly not having a clue what I am doing...until later when they see what I saw through the lens! Just wonderful!

  18. Hi Laura

The surf lifesaver that drove past looked at me with a quizzical expression when I was bent over the sand peering through my lens...

I'm glad to have found another soul sister...

  19. The last time I went for a walk on the beach I saw similar patterns, and thought to photograph them, but didn't. You've done a great job capturing the beauty that lies right under our feet if only we have eyes to see the miracles here, now. I loved the dog, and would not have seen him had you not pointed him out. Woof!

  20. I love these sand patterns Delwyn. Another of nature's treasures to be found on the shoreline.

  21. Yes. You indeed have a wonderful ability to see. Thanks for the inspiration and pleasure for the eyes.

  22. And all the more remarkable as it changes by the minute, wave by wave.

  23. These are great. I really enjoyed them. I saw a piece in an exhibition one where the artist had made molds on the sand of the patterns and then cast them in glass.

  24. Such beautiful textures that are so diverse. I like the one made by a helper too. It almost looks Oriental. Thanks for sharing.

  29. Hi Martin

after I have walked through the heavy deep and soft coral sand I take my time at this end of the beach where it is firmer and easier to walk...this misty morning there were only an odd few people walking - perfect...

  31. Hi Ayu

great to have you over again

    Ellen, how are you...
that was clever, the sand must have been quite firm I imagine...

    Hello Larry,
they are textures - yes and almost like textiles, they reminded me of that washed out batik from Indonesia you see in browns and blues.

    Hi Lola
I think I just see because I am in no hurry and am prepared to look at what is...maybe I have a funny sense of perception!

    Hi GW
yes that is why I thought of the paradox - they are both timeless and transitory, - always appearing on the beach but always changing too...

  33. Hi Wanda

I can't imagine your climate Wanda...This has been cool here...and I've even caught a head cold...so am taking it easy...a run to the airport with one daughter today, and two more family members off on Sunday and then we have a quiet week before heading back down under...
We have been missing torrential rains at home...6" one night and the whole year's worth in a few days...I hope that my garden is still there!
